WHAT IS LUGOLS IODINE?
Lugol’s Iodine Solution is an antiseptic mixture of Elemental Iodine and Potassium Iodide which was introduced into medicine in 1829 by French physician Jean Lugol. It is possibly effective as a bactericide and fungicide. Lugol’s Iodine is a transparent, dark brown liquid which contains 10% Potassium Iodide and 5% Elemental Iodine in distilled water, with each drop containing approximately 6.5 mg of Iodine. This is known as 15% Lugol's Iodine, and is a convenient and very economical way to restore your Iodine levels.
USE
Lugol's Iodine is a perfectly balanced and bio-available Iodine supplement which may also be used to purify suspect drinking water, as an antiseptic and as a disinfectant. To treat Iodine deficiency, up to 6 drops may be taken daily for three months, being the amount of time required to restore healthy Iodine levels. After this, a maintenance dose of 3 to 5 drops daily should be sufficient to retain the ideal Iodine levels. Lugol's Iodine is best taken with food in the morning.
A simple test to see if you are deficient in Iodine is to place a drip on the soft skin of your arm and rub it in (take care not to get this on clothing as it stains and can be difficult to remove). If the Iodine smear disappears within 30 minutes, you may be deficient, it should remain for at least 2 hours if your body has enough Iodine present.
According to Dr Lugol, the recommended daily intake is 35 mgs, but up to 50 mg a day may be taken, but be sure to start low and slowly build up to this amount. Start with 1 drop a day for a week, then 2 drops and continue this until you are taking 6 drops daily, which equates to 35 to 39 mg. If you have a reaction to Iodine at any level, take it back by a drop or two until your body settles down and gets used to this element. Lugol's Iodine may also begin releasing and binding to heavy metals in the system and may assist in eliminating them.

Lugol's Iodine may help with heavy metal chelation and removal. Similarly, the Iodide form, in this case Potassium Iodide, is only absorbed by the thyroid gland, skin and salivary glands, whereas the elemental Iodine storage sites are found in the breasts, prostate and intestines which can only absorb the molecular, Elemental Iodine form.
Some people may have a physical reaction when supplementing Lugol's Iodine, but these reactions may be due to a poor diet lacking in vital antioxidants and excess heavy metals. This reaction is called a Herxheimer Reaction or healing crisis, and is typically a transient reaction that may occur within 24 hours of taking some suppliments, including Iodine. The Iodine may be releasing heavy metals from the cells, causing the body to go into a temporary healing crisis. This usually passes if the dosage is lowered for a few days, then slowly raised to allow the body to gently re-establish a healthy level of Iodine.

Iodine may be required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones and to allow cell Apoptosis.
